When it comes to teaching someone how to sing I’m pretty down to earth about it.
I want my students to be able to self-correct so I tend not to waste time getting them to do things without explaining why. Vocal technique is a system and it can be a little bit complicated to understand, but the sooner somebody grasps that, the sooner they can develop their own self awareness and a feeling of empowerment, which are key to rapid improvement.
I believe, if you put conscious effort and time into it, singing isn’t very difficult. And that’s not because it came easily to me - actually, it happened because when I was 17 I had to learn everything from scratch. I had an incredible teacher (prof. Janet Delprat) - and in the process of that journey we completely changed the sound of my voice. That’s why I understand vocal technique, why it works and how. And I developed my own simple way of explaining it.
As a trained classical singer who works mostly in pop/contemporary styles of music, working on vocal technique to get a certain sound and style from a given voice (in a healthy way) is my area of expertise.
I studied Opera at the Queensland Conservatorium in Australia on scholarship and after graduating spent 3 years teaching voice and singing in opera and with orchestra. I then moved to Berlin where I signed to Universal Music as a pop songwriter, working in electronic music as well as working with a number of German actors and European bands in a vocal coaching role. (Mando Diao, Frederike Kempter etc)
I now live in Los Angeles where in 2017 I created Singschool.com as well as working increasingly with actors preparing for vocal roles in film. (Tiffany Haddish, Will Arnett, Graham Verchere, Kat Prescott, Chrissy Metz)
